Vividly rendering the heroic history of Texas, this panoramic exhibition of paintings and drawings represents half a century of passionate collecting by Houston's J.P. Bryan, chair of Torch Energy Advisors. The Bryan Museum collection focuses on "one of the most romantic chapters in world history: the settlement of the West," according to Bryan. "This process was wonderfully played out in Texas."
The Center for Texas Studies at TCU has drawn from the Bryan collection to mount "Deep in the Art of Texas" - an exhibition that will travel throughout the state. The collection is brilliantly focused: Bryan resolved to collect only the works of those artists who "actually participated in the events of the settlement of Texas … those who saw it in its fullest expression, or at the very least, while the dust was still settling on that unique chapter of United States history." As a result, Deep in the Art of Texas at once chronicles the state's early development and surveys the history of its art. Ron Tyler, former director of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, provides fascinating insights into the lives of such artists as Frank Reaugh and Julian Onderdonk, the "Brass Mug Club" and the development of the San Antonio and Dallas art scenes. As guest exhibition curator Michael W. Duty points out, "We can see how the state developed through [the artists'] eyes - their differing visions and points of view. Those visions into the unique environment and dynamic history of Texas are beautifully showcased in the Bryan Museum collection."
